An Addiction to Design

Are you a Reactive Designer or are you a Proactive Designer

Reactive Design. A process where you plan, purchase, dry fit, customize/design and repeat. All changes are based on how well things physically fit. This is a traditional method of build, but it is also the most time intensive and expensive.
Customizing on the fly is a work around for failing to anticipate fitment and assembly of components.

Proactive Design. A process where you plan, design, digital fit, fabricate/purchase, build. Customization is predetermined at the design and digital fit state of the process. Requires use of a CAD package, an advanced CAD skillset, and access to component geometry or a library of COTS parts. The latter is where 3D Twin Solutions comes in.

30 years of mechanical CAD design in the field of aerospace has provided a great insight into how proper design can be accomplished and what barriers need to be overcome to be timely and cost effective

The amount of money spent trying to acquire CAD geometry for COTS (Commercial Off-the-Shelf) parts is staggering. It can be difficult to track down or impossible to obtain from manufacturers. It results in delays in design schedules and wasted time with remodeling COTS parts that should be easily provided by the manufacturers. All adding up to additional costs not estimated in most proposals.

Modeling vs Scanning – Modeling takes time and the greater the amount of unique features a particular part may have, then the more time it will take to model. Scanning has become better and easier than ever. Tools such as our Einscan HX allows this process to exceed that of modeling. Using world class software such as Geomagic Essentials and Creo 8, we are able to create accurate models to fill that COTS space claim need.
